How do you calculate overtime pay?
Multiply the hours over the threshold by your regular rate, then by the overtime multiplier. At $25 an hour working 46 hours with overtime after 40, the 6 overtime hours pay 6 × $25 × 1.5 = $225, on top of $1,000 for the first 40. Gross is $1,225.
What is time and a half?
Your regular hourly rate multiplied by 1.5. At $20 an hour, time and a half is $30 an hour. It is the standard US federal overtime rate for hours over 40 in a workweek.
Is overtime calculated daily or weekly?
Federally, weekly. The Fair Labor Standards Act requires 1.5× for hours over 40 in a single workweek, so four ten-hour days is 40 hours and no overtime. Some states add a daily rule: California pays overtime after 8 hours in a day and double time after 12, which is why the threshold on this calculator is adjustable.
Who does not get overtime?
Employees classed as exempt, which generally requires being salaried above a threshold and doing executive, administrative or professional work. Job title alone does not decide it; the actual duties and the salary basis do. Independent contractors are not covered by the FLSA overtime rules at all.
