How do I calculate hours between two times?
Subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract any unpaid break. For example 09:00 to 17:00 is 8 hours; minus a 30 minute break gives 7 hours 30 minutes, or 7.5 decimal hours.
What are decimal hours?
Hours expressed as a decimal rather than hours and minutes. 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5 decimal hours, and 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75. Payroll systems and invoices almost always want decimal hours.
How do I handle an overnight shift?
Enter the times as normal. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift is treated as crossing midnight. 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours.
How do you add hours and minutes together?
Add the hours and the minutes separately, then carry every 60 minutes into an hour. 3:45 plus 2:30 gives 5 hours and 75 minutes, which carries to 6:15. Adding them as decimals instead is easier: 3.75 plus 2.5 is 6.25 hours.
How many hours is 9 to 5?
8 hours, or 7.5 once a 30 minute unpaid lunch is deducted. 9:00 to 17:30 with the same lunch is a true 8 hour day, which is why most schedules written as "9 to 5" actually run to 5:30.
