Timely is a good product that a lot of people buy for the wrong reason.

It was built for consultancies and agencies. Its Memory app records your activity in the background, its AI drafts timesheet entries, you approve them, and those entries become invoices. For that job it is one of the best tools available, and starting around $11 per user per month it is fairly priced.

The trouble starts when someone who does not bill anyone buys it because it was described as AI-powered automatic time tracking. Both halves of that phrase are true, and the daily experience is still that you sit down and approve a list.

The three reasons people leave Timely

1. The approval queue. Timely's AI proposes; you dispose. Every entry, every day. If those entries become an invoice, that review is the most important thing you do. If they become a chart you glance at, it is a chore bolted to a tool you bought to remove chores.

2. The split workflow. Memory runs as a separate app from the main interface. Two surfaces for one job, and it never stops feeling like two.

3. Per-seat pricing for a solo habit. Team pricing makes sense when a team is billing hours. It is a lot to carry for one person who wants to know where Thursday went.
