What is 15 minutes as a decimal?

0.25 hours. Divide the minutes by 60: 15 divided by 60 is 0.25. The other quarter-hours are 30 minutes as 0.5 and 45 minutes as 0.75.

What is 20 minutes as a decimal?

0.33 hours, rounded to two places. The exact value is 0.3333 recurring, because 20 does not divide evenly into 60. Payroll systems normally accept two decimal places.

Why is 7:30 written as 7.5 and not 7.3?

Because minutes are base 60 and decimals are base 100. Thirty minutes is half an hour, and half of 1.00 is 0.50. Writing 7.30 on a timesheet claims 7 hours and 18 minutes, so the mistake costs twelve minutes every time it is made.

How do I convert decimal hours back to minutes?

Multiply the decimal part by 60. In 7.75 hours, 0.75 times 60 is 45, so it is 7 hours 45 minutes. The common error is reading 7.75 as 7 hours 75 minutes, which is not a valid time at all.

The twelve minutes this costs people

The single most common timesheet error is writing 7:30 as 7.30 rather than 7.5. It looks right, it passes every validation rule, and it quietly claims eighteen minutes where you meant thirty. Over a year of weekly sheets that is most of a working day, which is a strange thing to lose to a notation.

Or stop filling these in

A calculator can only add up what you remembered to write down, and what you write down a week later is smoother and more purposeful than the week was. Cronus records which app and window you were in and works out what the time was in service of, automatically. No timer to start, so the chaotic days produce a record instead of a gap.
